That suspension looks incredibly unpleasant

i love watching that old stuff. its fun to look at how they use about 3 different trucks to shoot one scene. ah, the good old days.....

Broken as well, but I meant more the way it bounces the truck feet into the air upon landing. That’s an unpleasant ride. It’s also how off road suspensions worked back then. The ability for modern off road vehicles to just squat and go with minimal rebound is light years apart.

Sometimes you can even spot the bodywork!

Indeed, note the camber adjustment on the straight axle front suspension that the landing does.

yeah, you got the 81 with the brush guard and winch, and then it goes to the interior truck without the rollbars, and on the the landing of the ‘78.......

Kinja'd!!!

i liked the later shows, that had the dedicated jump trucks with the reinforced axles and suspension bits......

Yep, shocks have advanced bigly in the past 30 years.

It’s kinda unfair to compare a solid axle / leaf spring pickup truck to a moder trophy truck, however. I reckon if you launched a new, comparably bro’d F150 / F250 off of the same jump, it would still bounce pretty badly.

My race Ranger has leaf springs in the rear and the factory independent in the front, just with quad bypass race shocks. I’ve never achieved the same amount of air as the truck in the gif, but for all the jumps I have done it’s just squatted and taken off.
